Resorts in Vegas Banking on Annual Spring Break Boost

Author: nick21 - Categories: Las Vegas Hotels

It was 1986 when an up-and-coming music TV network first touched down in Daytona Beach for its inaugural spring break special.

It was before anyone had ever heard of a reality TV show, but the throngs of inebriated college students and bikini-clad girls made an instant hit for MTV.

Twenty-five spring break seasons later, the network this year was in Las Vegas, where MTV chose the Palms as its base for spring break debauchery, a resort once home to the popular “Real World” series.

The party wrapped up Wednesday after four days of concerts, but Las Vegas resorts will be feeling the spring break buzz for the next few weeks. The season arrives in mid-March, when most college students have a weeklong break from academics, and it can last through April.

Spring-breakers braved cool temperatures and packed the pool at the Palms last week for performances from artists including PitBull, Ne-Yo, Wiz Khalifa and “Jersey Shore” star-turned-celebrity-DJ Pauly D.

“This helps solidify our brand as a place where people come to have fun and enjoy themselves, and it promotes our pool,” Palms owner George Maloof told the Sun last week.

It also generates revenue. Maloof said the four-day party surpassed the numbers the Palms initially projected.

Other Las Vegas resorts are hoping to do the same as the spring break season gets into full swing this week. MGM Resorts International is marketing spring break as “6 resorts. 1 party” at its mid-level Strip hotels.

“We expect this spring break to be a great one for our resorts. It’s difficult to track numbers since the break spans nearly a two-month period, but we anticipate an increase in visitors of about 20 percent over last year,” said Jenn Michaels, MGM Resorts’ vice president of public relations.

Las Vegas Hotel to Check Into Delhi’s Hospitality District

Author: nick21 - Categories: Las Vegas Hotels

Las Vegas-based hotel-casino MGM Grand has firmed up plans to check into the hospitality district near the international airport in Delhi. This will be MGM’s first destination in India, and it expects to be ready by early 2014. There won’t be any casino here, though.

MGM Grand, with its characteristic lion at the entrance, is one of the prominent structures on The Strip, referred to a long stretch in Vegas lined with hotels and casinos on both sides.

The MGM Grand and Skylofts in New Delhi will be part of a dynamic multiple-hotel development in the national capital, MGM (hospitality) vice-president of development-India Rishi Kapoor told Business Standard. “Groundbreaking on the project is scheduled for this month and MGM Grand New Delhi is expected to welcome its first guests in early 2014,” he said.

Replying to a questionnaire sent by this newspaper, a spokesperson of DIAL (Delhi International Airport Ltd) said it had leased land to developers and it was the developers’ responsibility to tie-up with hotel operators. “It is our understanding that one of the developers has tied up with MGM ,” the DIAL spokesperson said. DIAL is a consortium led by the GMR Group.

The MGM Grand will offer a variety of accommodations and the full-range of luxury services, according to Kapoor. “The new hotel will feature approximately 480 MGM Grand guest rooms, along with a number of exclusive Skylofts brand suites and serviced apartments,” he said.

Located in The Strip area of Las Vegas, Skylofts is a luxury boutique hotel on the top of MGM Grand. The group describes it as a “private sanctuary tucked within the clouds”.

New Cosmopolitan of LV Hotel Opens Dec. 30th

Author: nick21 - Categories: Las Vegas Hotels

Last December, Vegas got about 6,000 new rooms with the opening of three hotels in the CityCenter complex.

Wednesday, the new $3.9 billion Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas resort is due to add about 3,000 more. The sleek new luxury casino resort is located between the Bellagio and CityCenter and was completed with extra funding from now-owner Deutsche Bank after a developer dropped out.

One draw that’s rare on the Strip: Some rooms have balconies. Rates officially start at $199, but can be lower on certain dates.

Grand opening is Dec. 30, kicking off a big invitation-only New Year’s Eve weekend, with Hollywood stars set to fly in and Coldplay and Jay-Z scheduled to entertain.
The question among Vegas-watchers: Can Sin City support yet another upscale lodging at a time when many are dropping prices to bring in business, or will the Cosmopolitan add to Vegas’ image as a destination that increasingly appeals to upscale visitors?

What do you think?

Check Out Late in Las Vegas

Author: nick21 - Categories: Las Vegas Hotels, Las Vegas Vacation

Check-out time at most hotels is noon. However, most offer a “late check-out” option for a price. If your flight doesn’t leave until the evening, using this late check-out option can give you another all-nighter at the tables or another day of sunning out by the pool. Simply ask a front desk clerk for check-out times and costs.

If you have a players card for the hotel because you were getting your play rated, ask about getting this late check-out as a comp.

Hotels for a Low Cost Las Vegas Trip

Author: nick21 - Categories: Las Vegas Hotels, Las Vegas Vacations

Often time you read about great deals for hotels only to find out you have to take two buses and walk two miles just to get to where the action is. That is not the idea behind a cheap vacation. You want to enjoy yourself at all the spots that the big money people are at but at a fraction of the cost.

  • Las Vegas in the middle of the week is far more affordable. It still can be absurdly cheap on a Tuesday night. The defining factors are often conventions and major events but on average rooms are cheaper during the week. Avoid weekends all together if possible, table limits are higher, restaurants reservations are harder to come by and the room might cost you three times as much.
  • Once again, compare rates at different hotels. The key to a cheap vacation is information and the more you have the better your chances of saving a few dollars.
  • Location is important. In Las Vegas you need to have access to everything and the ability to walk from casino to casino. Hotels you should consider, each are in the center of the Las Vegas strip and consistently have lower room rates:

o Harrah’s
o Imperial Palace
o Bill’s Gambling Hall
o Flamingo
o Bally’s

A Few Tips to Get a Cheap Room Rate in Vegas

Author: nick21 - Categories: Las Vegas, Las Vegas Hotels

It seems like Las Vegas is getting more and more expensive every year.  Although the prices of hotels don’t even begin to compare with ones in other major cities (such as New York and Boston), you still never want to pay more for a room than you have to.  In order to get the best rate available, you have to do a little research.

First, decide which hotel it is that you’d like to stay at.  Once you’re settled on one, find out what the average price is.  If it’s more than you can afford, think of what you’d be comfortable spending.   Remember, it’s cheap to get around in Vegas.

Next, sign up for promotions on the hotel’s website.  Also, some hotels will let you sign up for their players club over the internet.  Doing either one of these things will be sure to get you offers for cheaper room rates.  If you have a players club (slot) card, log onto the website for that hotel-casino and select the “hot deals” or other button that is for players club (slot) card members.  You will find a calendar there which will show rates for each day for several months, allowing you to consider how flexible you want to be in order to get the best rate.

In the meantime, before your offers start pouring in, start checking prices on different websites.  First, look on the hotel’s website.  Then, try others such as Sidestep.com, Kayak.com, Bookingbuddy.com, Expedia, travelocity.com and Orbitz.  Check prices every day, a couple of times a day, because rates can fluctuate wildly.  You might consider looking into package deals on those sites such as AAVacations, Yahoo Vacations, United Vacations, Frontier Flyaway, etc.  Travelocity and most airline and other travel websites also offer you the option to shop for air/hotel packages. You can often get a good rate by booking an air/hotel combination while still having the option to select preferred flights and hotels.

However, as noted earlier, whenever you book through any online site, be sure to do the research first.  Make sure the room type you’re booking is the one you want (for example, a lot of sites offer more than one room type.  Circus, Circus for example, offers discounts on Regular rooms in the Manor, which are in an older part of the hotel at the back of the property and are much less desirable.  At the El Cortez, the “classic” rooms are older, and accessible only by stairs from the casino. The pavillion rooms are reached via elevators within the casino and are located on top of the parking garage with outside corridors and porch overhangs.  While adequate and clean, these pavillion rooms are somewhat small. The El Cortez tower rooms are bigger than the average hotel room, but are the longest walk from the parking garage.

A number of hotels are now adding on daily surcharges for local taxes, energy, phone usage (whether you use the phone or not), etc. and hiding the charges by calling them “resort fees.”  These fees currently range from $4 to $8 per day in addition to your quoted room rate.  Not all hotels have these charges, but you should be aware that they may be there and budget for them.  If you book directly with the property, be sure to ask what additional daily charges will be added to the room rate quoted.

Remember, when you book online you are acting as your own travel agent and you have to do the legwork.  Be sure to check websites that offer “video tours” of the hotel in which you are interested.  The other downside to the packages is that in a number of cases, they have to be paid in full at time of booking and may or may not be refundable or exchangeable.  Some sites do offer insurance for these packages, but be sure to check the terms and conditions on the policy.  Most will only cover cancellations in case of an emergency.  If you opt to log in with your slot card and make your reservation by that route you will usually be immediately charged for one night’s deposit, with the remainder being charged at your check-out time.  This deposit is usually refunded if you cancel your reservation within the hotel’s cancellation policy guidelines.

Try to avoid staying on a weekend, as the prices skyrocket at that time.  Sunday through Thursday is usually a lot cheaper.  It would also be wise to do a search on Yahoo or at lasvegastourism.com for the Las Vegas convention schedule.  Do not stay there during large conventions because rates can quadruple.

If all else fails, call the hotel directly (particularly if you absolutely MUST have a nonsmoking room for health or other reasons; you must call again a couple of days before your departure to ensure that you actually get one).  They will be able to tell you when rates will fall and might even be able to tell you about upcoming promotions.

In addition, you can get better rates if you are not travelling during peak Vegas times such as New Years!! That said, however, durig the two weeks before Christmas this town is practically empty and rates are cheap, too. (Be aware, though, that some of the shows and attractions are shut down during this time period, so if you are coming to see a specific show be sure to check first).

You might also consider staying at resort/casinos off the strip. For example, Sam’s Town (offers its own shuttles to many hotel/casinos both downtown and on the Strip), Fiesta Rancho, Station Casinos, Coast Casinos, and The Silverton (several off-strip casino/hotels, such as Terribles, also offer a free airport shuttle - an amenity not normally provided by the strip hotels). You can still gamble at these places and get cabs or city buses (or the Trolley from Silverton) to the strip action.  The slots and tables usually pay better and the rooms are usually cheaper away from the strip.  The Coast Casinos are a great option because they offer shuttle service to their casino, Barbary Coast (The Barbary Coast NO longer exists, though the shuttle may still be running.  It is now a Harrahs property named Bills Gambling Hall and Saloon), on the strip. So you can stay at the Orleans for example, and take the shuttle to the strip. And Harrah’s runs a shuttle between its Strip locations and the Rio.

Most Las Vegas hotels have “Hot Deals” for room rates and special combos with meal, show and spa discounts on their own websites. If you book directly with the hotel and they post a lower rate for your date - a phone call to them will get you the lower rate - if this is done before your arrival. Prices can change dramatically according to supply and demand. If you encounter any problems with the cleanliness of your room or have any other major complaints about service - don’t be shy.  Let the manager know immediately; many hotels will offer compensation in the form of meal vouchers or even a further room rate reduction.

And a final tip- Some properties, including those belonging to Harrah’s,  offer a “best price guarantee.” Check the details on their websites, but the quick version is that if you can find a rate on another travel site that beats the rate they’re offering on one of their own sites and can follow their instructions for taking advantage of the guarantee you can get the room for even less than the third party’s price. Great deals can be lined up this way, so be sure to keep checking for lower prices even after you’ve booked a room. Of course, this only works if you’ve booked directly through the hotel and not through a third party site.
